People like Costco because of the Kirkland brand. Kirkland puts out some pretty high quality stuff for a store brand but you pay store brand prices. I think thats what most people mean when they say its cheap.

The issue is most people buy shit they otherwise would not care about buying. For example, Costco has these dark chocolate covered mangoes that I would possibly kill for. But before I shopped at Costco, I never would have thought I needed chocolate covered mangoes. So yeah, I guess its cheap but Im not saving money when I buy random shit that looks appealing.

If you are truly looking to maximize Costco value, only use it to buy meat like chicken breast. Throw the meat in the freezer and thaw as much as you need for your next meal. Also use Costco for dog food, TP, bottled water, wine, oatmeal/cereal. Costco is not ideal for stuff that goes bad quickly (milk, produce, etc)

YES, this for sure

There was a Twitter Thread about the economics behind Costco. Basically, they sell their products at cost and sometimes at a loss, and make up everything else with memberships. They make an ungodly amount of money off of memberships.

Yep, I saw that also. They have good retention.

I ended up initially getting the regular membership for $40. It cost $60 but came with a $20 cash card, plus some coupons for free home supplies that ended up being worth like $30.

Then they had a deal where you can upgrade to the executive membership for $60 more, but they gave me a $60 cash card. So that was free...

I probably won't renew next year.

The things they have in bulk aren't things I buy anyway. I don't buy much snacks for example. So those kinda savings don't matter to me.

It's not like I'm paying noticeably less for my eggs, rice, veggies, and lentils at Costco than any other store.

People kept saying it made grocery shopping noticeably cheaper, plus they had a decent Groupon on a membership, so I got it.

Been 2 months, honestly, I don't see the prices being that much cheaper. At least not for the food staples I buy. Maybe I'm just buying the wrong things.

If you buy a lot of frozen type bulk meals, or just home supplies like toilet paper and tissue paper, I can see it being good. Just by having access to the bulk item plus a little bit of savings there.

This truck is 39k and the model 3 is 34k. And that's before price reduction from incentives and factoring in how much you'll save not buying gas.

Pshh, who actually buys the basic basic Tesla's models without the upgrades

Na, but for real, the cars have lowered in price. If you're someone that's looking to buy a luxury car, a Tesla should be considered.

You'd be surprised. There are a number of Teslas I see that are the base models. Can't tell whether they have the FSD upgrade included from the outside of course, but lots of people get the base models.

Which one are you going for?

@emblem_boy
Model S Long Range

If I get this new job, I'll probably have enough saved to make it a comfortable purchase either this summer or some time shortly after that. There are also rumors of that tri-motor thing they showed for the Cybertruck making its way to the Model S next summer.

You planning on keeping it long term?

I ask because when people bring up the economics of a Tesla, such as gas, maintenance, etc, they talk about long term costs. And in my head I'm thinking how the people who do buy Tesla's, aren't really the people I imagine driving the same cars for like 5+ years

I feel like we could get a car with an unlimited energy source that can go 300mph and people would bitch that it looks ugly and not buy it

Aesthetics matter for people, I'm not sure why you think a car is any different than tons of other functional things that people purchase.

I mean, I don't care much about my cars looks as well, apart from it being neat on the inside, but I understand why it matters for many.

Not sure what you're getting at
What I'm getting at here is that very few people are actually qualified to provide care for children with disabilities like this and probably nobody here is.

You're downplaying the adversity of Downs Syndrome for I don't really know why. Because it's not as bad as Harlequin Fetus?

It's not right to suggest people should care for special needs children that they're not qualified for, especially since you know well in advance you'd never ask them to look after your own children. People can barely raise neurotypical physically healthy children. Let's not make things worse, ya?

I don't mean to downplay the difficulty. I specifically say it's a difficult thing and I don't think I said anyone should have to care for people they aren't qualified for.

Those who are in that situation need all the support they can get.
